Spotify Lets Fans Remix Songs With AI, Paying the Original Artists

“What we’re building is grounded in consent,” Alex Norström told reporters this week. The claim rings true, at least on paper, as Spotify teams up with Universal Music Group and other major labels to let users bake AI‑powered remixes right from their playlists. The new feature will show up as a paid add‑on for Premium members, a detail that keeps the conversation squarely in the business arena.

Spotify’s move follows a 2023 promise to forge “responsible AI products” with UMG, Sony, Warner, Merlin and Believe. Nobody knew what that meant at the time, but it seems the first fruit of the partnership is now out in the open. The company says fans can prompt the platform to remix any track, and the result can be shared – though only if the original creator has opted in. Those who do will earn royalties that flow back to the original artist or songwriter.

Artists get to decide. The initiative sits on a triad of premises: Choice in participation, Fair compensation, and Artist‑fan connection. Ko‑CEO Alex Norström said the approach is designed with consent and credit at its core, but the company acknowledges the hard question of how much is enough from the industry’s side. Meanwhile, Lucian Grainge of UMG voiced the same hope that “innovations… bring artists and fans closer together.” It’s a tidy narrative, but the reality of royalty splits and technical constraints could sour the pitch.

Spotify’s AI tool will require a subscription upgrade, which might make some fans wary. Yet the idea of turning a familiar tune into a unique fan‑crafted version could redefine how artists monetize streaming. If the success metrics from other paid‑add‑on models hold, the revenue could flood into the old system most of the time
