Air India Flight Slams Tail into Bengaluru Runway During Landing

The metal tail of the Airbus A320 rattled against a strip of concrete at the end of the Bengaluru runway, a sudden jolt that sent a ripple through the cabin.

The flight, scheduled from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Kempegowda International Airport, was on its final approach when the tail caught the ground a few hundred metres before touchdown. No passengers were reported hurt, but the aircraft sustained visible damage that forced a temporary exit from service.

What exactly happened is still a grey area. A tail strike can result from a too steep descent, a crew misreading instruments, or sudden gusts that push the nose up. In any case, the impact ripples: the tail may lose its aerodynamic shape, or worse, a structural crack can open up.

Air India stated that the crew immediately aborted the landing and diverted to a nearby runway extension, while preliminary data from the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder shows a sudden downward thrust on the control columns.

Investigators from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will review the black box to pin down whether the pilot’s altitude input slipped. They’ll also check the runway surface, noting that Bengaluru has had a history of uneven stretches from early evening traffic.

This incident lands in a broader conversation about safety when airlines rush schedules. While tail strikes are relatively rare, they can uncover hidden risks in aircraft maintenance or pilot training. In the days ahead, the flight may be grounded for a thorough inspection, costing the airline time and money.

For travellers, the reality is clear: one moment, a routine 250‑mile hop turns into a high‑stakes emergency, and the out of the blue delay that follows can stretch into a full day.

Will this be just another side‑note in Air India’s long history or a herald of deeper scrutiny? The answer may shape every future flight in the Indian skies.
